Getting to Know the Subject

Preparation and thorough knowledge of the subject is one of the key elements to a successful portrait shoot. In order to capture the character and learn the true identity that lies beneath the surface, I will meet face to face and chat informally for about an hour. This ‘getting acquainted’ time is invaluable for me as a photographer to get any ideas that the person may have as well as suggestions from my side of the lens. It also gives the subject a chance to get to know me, my style and personality well before any pictures are taken. I am a firm believer that the subject/photographer has to bond and be on ‘the same page’. The subject has to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible in order to achieve the desired image. This can only be achieved by having full confidence and trust in the person taking the photograph.
